Frequently Asked Questions
Alarms & Wakeup
How does Persistent Wakeup work?
After you dismiss an alarm, WakeUp uses your phone's motion sensors to check if you actually picked it up. If no motion is detected within 30-120 seconds (configurable in Settings), follow-up alarms fire automatically at intervals you choose. It's the alarm that won't give up until you're out of bed.
What alarm sounds are available?
19 unique sounds across three categories: Gentle (Morning Birds, Ocean Waves, Gentle Chimes, Soft Piano, Rain Drops, Rooster), Moderate (Classic Beep, Door Knocking, Wake Up Yell, Emergency), and Urgent (Police Siren, Ambulance, Air Raid Siren, Explosion, Car Crash, Plane Crash, Paranormal, Baby Crying, Tornado Storm). Each alarm can have a different sound.
What is Smart Volume Ramp?
Instead of blasting at full volume instantly, Smart Volume Ramp starts your alarm quietly and gradually increases the volume over 5-30 minutes (you choose the duration, default is 10 minutes). This gives you a gentler wake-up experience.
Sleep Tracking
How does sleep tracking work?
WakeUp uses your iPhone's microphone and Apple's SoundAnalysis ML framework to detect 9 types of sleep events: snoring, coughing, sleep talking, sneezing, loud sounds, crying, knocking, sirens, and movement. It records audio throughout the night, tracks sleep phases (REM, light, deep), and generates a sleep quality score (0-100).
What are sleep phases?
WakeUp tracks three sleep phases: REM (rapid eye movement — when you dream), Light Sleep, and Deep Sleep. The sleep phase graph shows how you cycled through these phases during the night. A good night's sleep includes balanced time in all three phases.
How does heart rate tracking work?
WakeUp reads heart rate data from Apple Health (collected by Apple Watch or other compatible devices). If heart rate data is available for your sleep session, it displays a chart showing your heart rate throughout the night. You need to grant HealthKit permissions in Settings.
What is AI Sleep Chat?
AI Sleep Chat lets you ask questions about your sleep data in natural language. Ask things like "How was my sleep this week?" or "Am I snoring more lately?" and get personalized insights based on your tracked data. Enable it in Settings > Intelligence.
Sleep Sounds
How many sleep sounds are available?
28 sounds across 5 categories: Nature (Rain, Ocean, Wind, Creek, Campfire, Thunderstorm, Forest Birds, Crickets, Waterfall, Underwater, Tornado Storm), Mechanical (Airplane Cabin, City, Truck, Train, Fan, Vacuum, Hair Dryer, Washing Machine, Shower), Ambience (Coffee Shop, Keyboard Typing), Body & Animal (Heartbeat, Cat Purring, Snoring), and Noise (White Noise, Brown Noise, Pink Noise — synthesized in real-time).
Can sleep sounds auto-stop?
Yes! You can set a stop mode: fade out when sleep is detected (the app monitors motion and gradually fades the sound over 30 seconds), or set a fixed timer (1h, 2h, or 3h).
Smart Home
How do I connect Philips Hue lights?
Go to Settings > Smart Light Control > Philips Hue. The app will discover Hue bridges on your local network. Press the button on your bridge when prompted, and WakeUp will pair with it. Then you can assign light actions (turn on, set color, flash) to any alarm.
How do I set up Home Assistant?
Go to Settings > Smart Light Control or Climate Control > Home Assistant. Enter your Home Assistant URL (local network address) and authentication token. WakeUp will discover your lights and climate devices automatically.
How do I set up Homey?
Go to Settings > Smart Light Control, Climate Control, or Smart Locks and select Homey. Enter your Homey IP address (with port) and API key (generate one at tools.developer.homey.app). Tap Connect and WakeUp will discover your Homey lights, climate devices, and locks automatically. Make sure Port Forwarding is enabled in Homey's Settings > System.
Can I set different automations per alarm?
Yes! Each alarm has its own Light Automation and Climate Automation sections. Your morning alarm can turn on bedroom lights and set the thermostat to 72°F, while your weekend alarm can do something completely different.
Weather & AI
How does weather work on the clock?
Grant location permission in Settings > Weather and choose from 3 weather providers: Apple Weather (native), Open-Meteo (free API), or wttr.in. The clock face displays current temperature, weather conditions, high/low forecast, and weather alerts. You can customize temperature units (C/F) and wind speed units (km/h, mph, m/s, knots). Weather data refreshes automatically and is cached for 1 hour.
What are AI weather tips?
When Intelligence is enabled in Settings, the clock face shows a smart tip based on current weather — like "Bring an umbrella today" or "Perfect weather for a walk." Tips update with the weather.
General
Does the app work in the background?
Yes. Alarms fire using iOS notifications even when the app is closed. Sleep tracking and nightstand mode require the app to remain open (the screen stays on in nightstand mode with adjustable brightness). Timers show in Dynamic Island even when backgrounded.
Can I back up my data?
Yes! WakeUp supports iCloud backup. Go to Settings > iCloud Backup to back up your alarms, sleep data, recordings, and settings. You can restore on any device signed into the same iCloud account.
How do I sync with Apple Health?
Go to Settings > Health and enable HealthKit integration. WakeUp will export your sleep sessions to Apple Health and can read heart rate data for sleep charts. You can enable auto-sync so sleep data exports automatically after each session.
How do I change the theme?
Go to Settings > Theme. Choose from 12 themes: Midnight, Ocean, Sunset, Forest, Aurora, Daylight, Rose, Volcanic, Arctic, Lavender, Tron Legacy, and Candy. You can also choose from 6 matching app icons (Sunrise, Sunset, Ocean, Midnight, Gold, Mono) in the same section.
Why does the app need microphone access?
Microphone access is only used for sleep tracking to detect sleep events and record audio. It is never used when you're not actively tracking sleep. All recordings are stored privately on your device or in your personal iCloud.
Is my data private?
Absolutely. All your data is stored exclusively on your iPhone and optionally in your personal iCloud account. Nothing is ever uploaded to our servers, shared with third parties, sold to advertisers, or collected in any way. There are no analytics, no tracking, no ads, and no third-party SDKs. Smart home communication stays on your local network (except Nuki which uses the Nuki Cloud API). All AI features run entirely on your device. Your data belongs to you, and only you — always. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Timer & Stopwatch
Can I run multiple timers at once?
Yes! You can run up to 4 timers simultaneously, each with its own custom label, duration, and completion sound. All timers show in the Dynamic Island on supported iPhones and work in the background.
Does the stopwatch support laps?
Yes. Tap Lap to record split times. The fastest lap is highlighted and the slowest is marked. The stopwatch also supports Dynamic Island live activities.
Languages & Personalization
What languages are supported?
WakeUp 2day supports 8 languages: English, Spanish, Italian, French, Japanese, Chinese (Simplified), Romanian, and Serbian. Change the language in Settings. AI responses are automatically translated to your selected language.
How many nightstand designs are there?
7 unique designs: Classic (glowing orb with particles), Minimal (ultralight on black), Nature (forest with green particles), Retro (flip clock with amber LED), Aurora (animated gradient), Tron Legacy (perspective grid with cyan), and Candy (pastel pink bubbles). Each supports both analog and digital clock modes.
